The economy may be in the doldrums, but that isn’t stopping wealthy fashionistas from buying a $39,000 alligator skin backpack designed by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. According to Ashley, The Row, the designer label behind the ridiculously expensive bag, is having a hard time keeping up with demand.
“It was the first thing that sold off the shelf,” Olsen told Women’s Wear Daily at a party for The Row in Paris.
The backpack, a simple, black bag with a gold clasp, debuted last July and Ashley was spotted carrying the pricy bag on the streets of New York this summer. Barney’s New York began carrying the bag around the same time in an attempt to compete with Hermes, another ultra luxury brand.
"Obviously we don't carry Hermes bags in the store so we were trying to find something that appeals to that customer who is willing to spend a lot of money on a bag that's going to last a long time and has a classic design," Barney's fashion director Amanda Brooks told Fashionista.
“I think if you were ever going to spend $39,000 on a bag, that's the bag you should buy because I think you'd wear it for a really long time,” she added.
Would you buy a $39,000 backpack, even if you were rich? 91% of New York Daily News readers said “no way,” though 8% would cough up the cash if they could afford it. I think I’d pass, considering $39k is more than many Americans make in a year.
