Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week kicked off in New York last night, bringing the usual mix of international supermodels, celebrities, and fashionistas. The seven-day event, running February 9 – 16, is one of the most celebrated events in the fashion industry.
The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection was the first show of New York Fashion Week and featured celebrities Gloria Estefan, Minka Kelly, Jenna Elfman, Christie Brinkley, Jennifer Nettles, and Linda Evans. Held in association with Million Hearts each year, the Heart Truth campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of heart disease.
“My grandfather died in front of me of a massive heart attack when I was 12, and he had five before that so I know what that’s like,” Gloria Estefan said of the importance of the campaign.
Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized the first Fashion Week in 1943 to bring more attention to American fashion. Thanks to World War II, fashion insiders were unable to attend the usual French fashion shows, and Lambert seized the opportunity to showcase the work of previously ignored American fashion designers. The fashion week, then called Press Week, was a big hit and Vogue began to regularly feature American fashion instead of focusing almost exclusively on French designs.
