The American Heart Association published a list Wednesday of seven simple things people over age 50 can do to extend their life as long as 40 more years.
What’s on the list? A bunch of things you might expect: no smoking, keeping a lean physique, exercising multiple times a week, eating healthy, and keeping cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure in check.
All of those things, research shows, can dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, two of the most common causes of death.
The group is also publishing an online quiz for people to take to determine how close they are to the ideal. A recent survey by the heart association found that 39 percent of Americans thought they had ideal heart health while 54 percent had been told they had room for improvement.
