Legendary Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper, who is undergoing intensive treatment for prostate cancer, has reportedly sought a divorce from his fifth wife.
The 73-year-old actor, who is perhaps best known for his role in the 1969 biker film Easy Rider, cited “irreconcilable differences” in a divorce petition against his wife of 14 years, Victoria Duffy.
“I wish Victoria the best, but only want to spend these difficult days surrounded by my children and close friends,” Hopper said in a statement.
Hopper and Duffy have a 6-year-old daughter.
A spokesman for Hopper reported that the actor is “fully conscious” and undergoing a new round of chemotherapy drugs to treat the cancer. The spokesman added that Duffy will remain living at Hopper’s California home until she can find other living arrangements. The divorce will not affect what Duffy receives from Hopper’s estate, the spokesman said.
A Hopper family friend was quoted as saying that Hopper pursued the divorce in order to prevent Duffy from inheriting a large amount of his fortune.
Hopper has starred in numerous memorable films throughout his more than 50-year career. They include Rebel Without a Cause, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, and Speed. He was twice nominated for Oscars; one for writing Easy Rider, the other for his role in the movie Hoosiers.
His many marriages have been known for being rocky. An eight-day marriage to Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and the Papas was said by Phillips to have been rife with abuse. Hopper also broke his first wife’s nose during a drug binge.
