Starting in 2011, you will be able to boldly go where just a handful of men have gone before. For a price.

A group of American entrepreneurs is preparing to launch the second-ever privately funded space vehicle, carrying just about anyone willing to pony up the required $200,000 for this touristic adventure. Dubbed “SpaceShipTwo,” the small rocket-propelled craft, which is the size of a small airplane, is reportedly in the final stages of construction with its first test flights scheduled for early 2010.

The ship will carry wealthy travelers to a height of 50,000 feet above sea level – about 20,000 feet higher than most airliners. More...

A U.S. writer has been awarded this year’s not-so-coveted “Bad Sex in Fiction Award” from Literary Review magazine.

Jonathan Littell, the bestselling author of a 900-page epic titled “The Kindly Ones,” took home the grand prize for a passage from the novel that compared female genitalia with various ancient Greek monsters, including “a motionless Cyclops whose single eye never blinks.”

We’ve seen the moon. And Mars is on the to-do list. But before that, we just might take a detour to an asteroid.

NASA is reportedly looking to send humans to a “Near Earth Object,” known to regular folks as an asteroid, sometime around the year 2020.

The New York Daily News reports that such a mission could be an important stepping stone for an eventual manned mission to Mars as toward the development of plans to defend Earth from collision with asteroids and other space debris.

Scientists pitched the idea, and a proposed mission plan developed by Lockheed Martin, last week at a meeting of the Small Bodies Assessment Group, a body established by NASA to study non-planetary space objects. The plans must be considered by the White House and others before a decision is made.
