The benefits of weight loss are seemingly endless. Those with a healthy body weight are less likely to die a heart attack or suffer a stroke. They have overall lower blood pressure and are at a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease. However, according to a new study there’s a new benefit to add to the list: improved memory.

"We've known for a long time that obesity is a risk factor for things like Alzheimer's disease and stroke, and more recent work really shows that obesity is a link to memory problems and concentration problems before that even begins," said John Gunstad, an assistant professor of psychology at Kent State University. "If excess weight causes these problems, can losing weight help reverse them? That's what we wanted to research."

According to an essay in the Daily Mail, seven pounds is the ‘holy grail,’ the magic number, of weight loss.  It’s an amount significant enough that, no matter what one’s starting weight is, clothes will fit differently (read: better, looser).

Essayist Jenny Dickinson says, “It’s also a loss that is physically noticeable on most women, so it’s in the region that will gain us recognition for our efforts.”

And, since 7 pounds really isn’t that much, it’s a relatively easy goal for most people to achieve. What’s not to like?

Plus, she adds, telling someone you want to lose seven pounds isn’t likely to elicit much criticism. For the average-sized woman, it’s a ‘safe’ number to lose, both physically and socially –without raising eyebrows about eating disorders or odd behavior.
